5 Training Tips Every Young Footballer Should Know

At Dragon Football Academy, we believe great players are built on solid foundations. Here are five tips we teach in every session.

1. First Touch is Everything

A good first touch gives you time and space. Practise receiving the ball with the inside of your foot, cushioning it softly rather than letting it bounce away. Even 10 minutes a day against a wall can transform this skill.

2. Use Both Feet

The best players in the world are comfortable on both sides. When practising at home, deliberately use your weaker foot. It will feel awkward at first — that's normal. Stick with it.

3. Head Up When You Dribble

Looking down at the ball means you miss teammates and opponents. Try to keep the ball close to your feet so you can feel it rather than watch it. This comes with practice and confidence.

4. Communication is a Skill Too

Talking on the pitch — calling for the ball, organising teammates, encouraging each other — is one of the most underrated skills in football. We encourage every player at Dragon Academy to find their voice.

5. Rest and Recovery Matter

Young players need proper rest between sessions. Sleep is when muscles grow and skills consolidate. Make sure your child is getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, and eating well around training days.
